Pecha-Kucha Vol. 2

01/15/09, Jazz Café Escazú.

Twenty times twenty. More than a mere multiplication, it is the numeric representation of a conceptually interesting event: Pecha Kucha Night. For approximately 6 minutes and 40 seconds a artist or young designer has the opportunity to expose his work to the public by displaying 20 images for 20 seconds each. The event – derived from a Japanese term meaning “chit chat” – has expanded in a viral manner throughout plenty of cities around the globe… and Costa Rica is not the exception.
On Thursday, January 15th, 2009 at the Jazz Café Escazú, the second version of the aforementioned event took place: Pecha Kucha Night Vol. II, which included the participations of 17 plastic artists, architects, musicians, designers and photographers. Among the participants figured such as Angel Lara, Mauricio Gamboa, Pepegrillo-ChaChaChá and Lina Rodriguez, whose ideas amazed the audience for more than two hours. The old-clothes-made-new, kitties, noise (and more noise), stuffed monsters, giant spoons and plenty of pop demonstrated the creativity, variety and inventiveness of the projects involved.
NoisNois, the last participant of the night, created an audiovisual proposal which included animations by Zavorío and Diegogo while Spaceship (lanave) played. Although some people dance while others remained in their seats, all assistants were immediately hypnotized by the particular combination of music and animations. When such frantic blend of images and sounds finally ended, Bullon gracefully closed the event with a DJ set.
However, Pecha Kucha Night Vol. II was not a perfect event because, at times, the audience showed disrespect and lack of interest by chit chatting and interrupting the presentations. Maybe the event lacked of a dynamism which provoked confusion amongst most people, yet I believe this aspect can be improved for future occasions. At least, all those present were able to witness the talent of emerging artists, designers and musicians.
Finally, it is important to note that, although the country is not entirely used to events of an alternative or anti-establishment nature, it is of great importance to continue with such projects. Why? Well, the answer is simple: these are new and enriching spaces that help the overall growth of the artistic production as well as the audience interested in national projects of cultural interest.
